Our England Vacation, Part 2 of 3

We also visited Berkeley Castle where King Edward II was murdered in 1327. I guess if you can't find a famous person who will volunteer to be to buried at your church, you can always imprison one and murder him, then provide the eternal arrangements on-site. I didn't post a picture of the castle itself because it was rather dull looking, and the grounds were prettier. Here are the girls heading down the steps to the lawn in front of the castle.

When you have this much cool stuff in one place, you need a few cannons to protect it. The guard house was nearly as big as our house, and you could imagine they had a mighty fine time firing these cannons into the field. I've seen bigger cannons in my day, but I suspect these would be sufficient to command the attention of anyone interested in compromising the security of the castle.

We went to Pricknash Abbey Wildlife sanctuary to see the birds and deer. This is one thing that grown-ups and kids would agree was fun. We fed the birds and deer by hand and watched the koi in their pond. Before we left, we let the girls play in the playscape, and about 6 p.m. we heard bells nearby playing. It seems the abbey is right next to the park, and a monk comes out each evening to play Evensong on the bells. We had our own private concert. It was a very pretty sound and a quite unexpected pleasure.

We stopped by Burton on the Water to see all the touristy things, including the miniature village. It was very pretty, and in many of the pictures I took, it's hard to tell it's so small except for the flowers that are out of proportion.

On to London, where among other things, we took a boat ride on the Thames river. This is the Tower Bridge as viewed through my Widelux- it's not really bent like that. It is a very large bridge, and they made provisions for pedestrians to walk over the top while the bridge was up- if they are willing to climb a gazillion stairs to get over the top.
