Bronze head from an over-life-size statue of Augustus, Roman, probably made in Egypt about 25 to 27 BC from Meroe, Sudan. The statue was decapitated by Meroitic tribesmen who raided Roman forts in Egypt. The head was taken beyond the imperial frontier and buried under the steps of a temple commemorating the successful raids. I'm telling you, you just can't make up a story this amazing. Wow. Check out those eyes. Spooky! You're just wandering around with your mouth wide open after seeing the Rosetta stone, and you bump into something like this. What a great story. Kit always said every piece of art needs a story before it's worth anything, and this beautiful bust has quite a story, wouldn't you say? You know it must be a great museum when the Rosetta Stone doesn't rate in the top tier of attractions. Did I tell you what the cost of admission was? Nada. That's right. If it's winter and you're cold, you can run in here to warm your tootsies for free. Not a bad place to hang out if you ask me. |

I can hear the captain now: "Hey Henry! Check out these bloody rocks. Load 'em on the ship, mate!" If you look, you can see the marble running way off in the distance, and that's just part of one side of the room. They got 'em all here. No wonder the Parthenon looks kinda beat up in the latest pictures. I knew this place was great before I came, but I didn't know exactly what to expect. If you ever get to this museum, you must allow at least an entire day, and find someone to take care of the kids when they melt down. Must come back.... |
That pretty much wraps up the vacation to England. I didn't post pictures of everything we did, 'cause if I did, you'd be waiting days for the page to load. We also walked into town (Uley) to eat at a genuine pub one night. It was a bit smokey, but it was nice just the same. Kids are welcome in pubs in England. The lady that ran this establishment said she visited Austin once because she loves our music. She she has all the CDs for the same musicians we listen to from central Texas. We also got to try a bit of the local brew: Uley Pigs Ear beer. Good stuff. Wish I could have another pint! They also have one called Pigor Mortis. I just like the way that sounds.
Well, pip pip! Gotta run. Hope you enjoyed it. If you want any more pics, or a higher resolution shot of one of the above, let me know.
Cheers,
The Travis family
