| Well, here's the put-in! We were warned about the mud because this section of the Rio Grande had flooded the week before, but we didn't expect a mud lake smack dab in the middle of the road at the put-in. It's just evil the way the eddy formed in this side road during the flood last week resulted in most of the coarse sand falling out right away- forming a dike at the river's edge. The really fine mud made it past that point to collect behind the dike on the road itself. The result is a mud hole you can truly get stuck in so badly you would require a rescue team to get out. I have been on trips where we rescued goats in the mud that were nearly dead from exhaustion. And I have seen cattle that died in the Rio Grande mud. It is unlike any mud you have ever seen and is deserving of respect. Careful probing of the bank in the background revealed that a narrow portion of the left side was firm. The rest was either soup or became soup once you stepped on it and shifted your weight once or twice. We slid the boats along the right side of the puddle where there was a decent trail beside the mud, and then hauled them over the firm part and down to the river. ->Next |
